A definition of dermatitis is inflammation of the skin. Dermatitis can be itchy and red, and also not have distinct margins. Dermatitis affects about one in every five people at some point in their lives. Dermatitis can be considered acute or chronic or perhaps both.

What is atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is a long-lasting (chronic) skin condition that causes intense itching and then a red, raised rash. It usually develops in early childhood and continues into the teen years. Adults may also have it, or have milder symptoms than they did as children, as well as sensitive skin problems.

If you have atopic dermatitis, your skin is very sensitive to irritants and is prone to becoming itchy and developing a rash. Scratching may seem to relieve the itch, but it often results in a rash and leads to a self-perpetuating cycle of itching, scratching, and rash.

What is contact dermatitis?
Contact dermatitis is a skin inflammation that is created from a substance that causes an allergic reaction. Many natural and synthetic chemicals can cause contact dermatitis.

There are two types of contact dermatitis. (Irritant) contact dermatitis is an exposure to a chemical that is naturally toxic, or is irritating to the skin. It can be caused by detergents and solvents or other harsh chemicals. (Allergic) Contact dermatitis is due to skin contacts that most people do not react to. Perfumes and hair dyes and rubber or preservatives can be possible contributors. A dermatologist can patch test a patient to see the cause of the allergy.

What Seborrhoeic dermatitis?
The seborrhoeic dermatitis is a dermatitis that is provoked by yeasts that live on the scalp. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is more common in men than in woman, and affects three percent of the population.

What is perioral dermatitis?
Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition that is prevalent in young woman. Perioral dermatitis typically refers to the area around the mouth. Redness, and small red bumps with mild peeling around the mouth area usually occur. The cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown. Many dermatologists believe its a form of rosacea. This skin condition is treatable. Oral antibiotics like tetracycline is often a recommended treatment.
