What is eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that appears as a red, itchy, rash. Eczema affects the skin with a dry cracked area that has become sore and ultimately, bleeds through scratching. The areas of the skin that are most problematic are the hands, face, elbows, and knees. Eczema can be caused by an irritation of the skin from a chemical, such as detergents in washing powder or fabric softeners. This is referred to as contact eczema. This condition may subside if you change the detergent and fabric softener that has caused irritation. Also eczema can be extremely uncomfortable in babies and young children because they find it very difficult not to scratch the skin. This is can be quite harmful, leading to infection.

What is the suggested eczema treatment?
The eczema treatment depends on the severity of this skin condition. A mild case of eczema might improve with a short term usage of a low strength steroid cream. There are available treatments such as creams, ointments, and bath additives that can offer repair and improvement in the skins condition.

Is baby eczema a common condition?
The diagnosis of eczema is usually determined when people are babies and young children. Baby eczema has resulted in more than half of people who have had first symptoms at the age of one. Baby eczema with symptoms becomes less severe as children grow into adults. Sometimes eczema continues into adulthood. In rare situations, eczema can start in adulthood.

Is there a treatment plan to cure eczema?
Eczema appears in both children and adults. However, eczema usually appears during infancy. Approximately 10 to 20% of the world population has been affected by this chronic itchy rash during childhood. In many cases, children with eczema find that the disease clears, and quite often disappears with age. There is no ideal treatment plan to cure eczema. The degree of eczema severity is variable.
