Hives
Hives (urticaria) are an allergic reaction of the skin. They appear as raised, red, itchy bumps (wheals) of different shapes and sizes, with defined red margins and pale centers. Hives may appear and then disappear at random. They may seem to move from place to place on the skin. Hives may range in size from less than 0.25 in.(0.64 cm) to 3 in.(7.62 cm) across or larger. Patches of hives may combine to form raised, reddened skin over large areas of the body. Hives may last a few minutes or a few days.
Hives may appear as a reaction to a medication, food, or infection. Food and drugs are the common cause of hives. A single area of swelling often occurs after an insect bite at the site of the bite. Other possible causes include contact with plants, things you breathe in (inhalants), stress, makeup, and exposure to heat, cold, or sunlight. Often a cause cannot be found.
Hives are often minor, but they can also be the first sign of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that requires emergency care.
The causes of hives
There should be certain tests that are done for ruling out hidden diseases that may contribute the hive breakout. A complete blood count, a stool sample, and kidney function tests might be done to evaluate any underlying disease. Although the cause of hives might not be determined, ruling out hidden diseases would be a reasonable plan for testing of hives breakout. What causes hives are variable, however, another suggestion would be to have a complete diet revision to possibly solve the problems of food allergy linkage to the hive breakout. A food allergy could very well have been the reason what cause hives to erupt. The determining hives treatment would be geared towards the result of the testing. If the hives treatment is not effective then perhaps a further evaluation is necessary.
