What is melanoma?
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that occurs in the pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes). These cells become abnormal, grow uncontrollably, and aggressively invade surrounding tissues. Melanoma may affect only the skin, or it may spread (metastasize) through the blood or lymph system to other organs and bones.
Although melanoma is the least common type of skin cancer, the frequency of melanoma in the United States is increasing. It is the most serious form of skin cancer. Malignant melanoma may be cured if caught and treated early, but it is rarely curable in its later stages. Approximately one in one hundred people in the United States will develop malignant melanoma at some point in their life.
People who have been diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer are at a higher risk of developing another new melanoma. A medical exam should be done frequently to rule out possible new developments of melanoma skin cancer.
Melanoma cancer should be diagnosed as early as possible. If the diagnosis is done earlier, the melanoma cancer can be treated when the tumor is thin, and not so deeply into the skin. If the melanoma cancer is not removed early, the cancer cells will grow and invade healthy tissue. Quite often, when a melanoma cancer gets thick and deep, consequently, the disease spreads to other parts of the body.
