What is a
Nail fungus
?
Nail fungus is an infection that occurs when a fungus invades the nail plate and the nail bed beneath a fingernail or toenail. Toenails are more commonly affected than fingernails, because they grow very slowly, allowing the fungus more time to develop. Toenails also require longer treatment time than fingernails do.

A nail fungus can be passed from person to person, sometimes via commonly used floors, shoes, or other personal items. Longstanding athlete's foot can result in fungal toenail infection. Shoes that are moist, tight, and do not allow air to circulate contribute to fungal infections. A nail fungus is also called onychomycosis or ringworm of the nail. This nail fungus often causes the end of the nail to separate from the nail bed. Debris may collect under the nail plate and discolor the nail bed.

Approximately 11 million Americans suffer from onychomycosis, and enarly 48 percent of individuals have at least one affected toe by the time they reach age 70. There are two types of skin fungus. Fungus you pick up from a contact, or fungus that develops internally. An external fungus can be treated externally with a topical treatment. If indeed the skin fungus has developed internally, you have to treat the fungus internally. If there is a continuous return of the skin fungus, it most likely is an internal skin fungus. Nail toe fungus is a chronic condition that gradually needs to involve more of the nail, and very rarely healing on its own. When the nail re-grows it is usually infected again, remaining a nail toe fungus.

Some causes of nail toe fungus? You stubbed your toe and damaged your nail. Your bare feet may have come in contact where someone recently stood with a fungus infection. You may have had a pedicure and the nail file, and nail clippers were used recently on someone with an infection. It would be beneficial to apply a topical cream that can effectively work as a toe nail fungus treatment. Another recommended toe nail fungus treatment would be expensive oral prescription medications.
