Shingles
What is shingles?
Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection of the nerve roots. It causes pain and a band of rash that spreads on one side of your body. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once you've had chickenpox, the virus lies dormant (inactive) in your nerve roots. If it becomes active again, it causes shingles, not another case of chickenpox. Some early signs of shingles symptoms are burning and shooting pain, along with tingling and itching. A few days later a rash of small blisters can be shingles symptoms that appear on the skin. The rash and pain of shingles usually disappear after 3- 5 weeks. However, there can be complications, such as constant pain and problems with hearing and vision. The invasion of the ophthalmic nerve can cause inflammation, impaired vision, and blindness. The infection of the facial nerves causes hearing loss and facial paralysis.
The shingles disease can be minimized by having immediate treatment. Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir,valacyclovir or famcyclovir are used today as effective treatments These drugs may prevent a complication of the shingles disease. Sometimes the pain from the shingles disease lasts longer then the rash has taken.
